Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSL975067 - Perform complex tests to measure chemical properties of materials

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Develop an analysis plan with supervisor

  1. Liaise with client or sample provider to determine test requirements and sample characteristics
  2. Match sample provided to accompanying documentation and report any discrepancies in accordance with workplace procedures
  3. Confirm suitable sample preparation methods, quantification and analytical techniques with supervisor

Reduce the complexity of the sample

  1. Obtain a representative analytical portion of the laboratory sample
  2. Prepare validation checks for analytical portions
  3. Use workplace procedures to simplify the sample matrix
  4. Conduct tests to ensure that sample preparation is complete

Apply quantification method

  1. Add modifiers to remove or minimise interferences
  2. Conduct preliminary analysis to estimate analyte concentration
  3. Match the concentration of analyte in the sample with the working range of the instrument
  4. Prepare calibration standards to suit quantification method
  5. Set up and optimise instruments to suit sample and test requirements
  6. Measure analyte response for standards, validation checks and samples
  7. Conduct sufficient measurements to obtain reliable data
  8. Return instruments to standby or shutdown condition in accordance with workplace procedures

Process, analyse and record data

  1. Confirm data is the result of valid measurements
  2. Perform required calculations and ensure results are consistent with estimations and expectations
  3. Record results with the appropriate accuracy, precision units and uncertainty
  4. Analyse trends in data and/or results and report out-of-specification or atypical results promptly to appropriate personnel
  5. Troubleshoot analytical procedure or equipment problems which have led to atypical data or results
  6. Follow procedures to ensure traceability of sample from receipt to reporting of results
